Seamless Acoustic Plaster

Problem

Acousticians have long sought a field-applied, smooth,
seamless, interior, absorptive finishing system with the appearance of painted drywall or plaster, to satisfy the aesthetic requirements of architects and clients.

Solution
RPG® is now offering a new patented field-applied seamless system that provides exceptional absorption, a strikingly beautiful appearance, with integral colouring and cleaning possibilities.
BASWA®phon offers a long awaited solution and is finding immediate application in architectural acoustics

The key ingredient of BASWA®phon is a proprietary emulsion
of mineral particles, which form a micro-porous membrane. The BASWA®phon Acoustic System consists of precoated mineral wool supporting panels, BASWA®phon-Fill, BASWA®phon-407 and BASWA®phon-Top. The precoated BASWA®phon mineral wool supporting panels are glued directly to a flat or curved wall or ceiling surface. The seams between the supporting panels are then filled with the BASWA®phon-Fill, which has the same composition as the surface layer on the pre-coated supporting panels. After drying, the seams are sanded and a higher density (smaller mineral particles) topcoat (BASWA®phon-Top) (BASWA®phon-407) is trowel applied and smoothed. When dry the base coat is sanded and a high-density (smaller mineral particles) topcoat BASWA®phon-Top) is trowelled on and smoothed. The dimension of the mineral particles decreases from factory applied precoat to the final topcoat, thus providing the appearance of a smooth, seamless conventional gypsum plastered surface.

Possible Applications Include
baswa exampleAirports, Atriums, Auditoriums, A/V rooms, Ballrooms, Cinemas and Home Theatres, Classrooms, Commons, Conference and Teleconference rooms, Courtrooms, Distance Learning Centres, Financial Exchanges, Libraries, Lobbies, Museums, Music Rehearsal Rooms, Pre-function Spaces, Recording and Broadcast Studios, Residences and Restaurants

RPG is offering two systems. The 40-mm (1.57") system consists of 2-mm (0.08") of supporting glue, 32-mm (1.26") mineral wool, 3-mm (0.12") factory applied pre-coat, 2-mm (0.08") of base coat and 1-mm (0.04") of top coat. The 68-mm (2.68") system consists of 2-mm (0.08") of supporting glue, 60-mm (2.36") mineral wool, 3-mm (0.12") factory applied pre-coat, 2-mm (0.08") base coat and 1-mm (0.04") topcoat.

The base and topcoats can be pigmented to match any desired colour. The surface can be renovated either to change the colour or to revitalize the acoustical properties, if the surface porosity is reduced due to dirt and grime over the years. This is accomplished by steaming the surface as you would to remove wallpaper. After softening, the outer topcoat is scraped off and then reapplied.

The BASWA®phon system can be applied to flat, inclined, curved, vaulted or domed surfaces. The supporting panels can be glued to concrete or to suspended drywall surfaces. The precoat on the supporting panels can be flexible. When the mineral wool is scored in one or two perpendicular directions on the rear side, the panel can conform to curved surfaces

Performancedata
BASWA®phon provides absorption by two mechanisms. The flat and smooth micro-porous surface provides mid-high frequency absorption by converting incident sound energy into heat. In addition, the bonded BASWA®phon mineral particles on the surface layer (mass) offer low frequency absorption through diaphragmatic vibration against the mineral wool backing (spring). The graph illustrates the random incidence absorption coefficient for a total system thickness (glue, pre-coated mineral wool mat, base coat and final top coat) of approximately 40-mm (1.57") and 68-mm (2.68"). Measurements are made with the BASWA®phon system applied to 12.7 mm (1/2") plaster board placed directly on the chamber floor following the ASTM C423 guidelines

Installation
baswa toolsBASWA®phon is a field-applied troweled on system that may be applied in a three step process over five days. The first step (Wednesday) involves applying approximately 3-mm of an approved glue to the rear of the pre-treated panels and attaching to the mounting surface. Following this, the joints as well as any cavities created by the installation, are filled with a proprietary seam fill (BASWAphon-Fill). The second step (Friday) involves sanding the seam fill and applying and smoothing a proprietary base coat (BASWAphon-407). The final step (Monday) involves sanding the base coat and applying and smoothing the final proprietary topcoat (BASWAphon-Top). The top coat must be applied in one continuous process until all of the desired area is covered. The topcoat provides the appearance of a conventional plastered surface
